After thinking I had misinterpreted the baby bootie pattern, I knitted the second one up the way I thought the designer meant it to be. Woops! Still turned out funky. So, I checked out the "errata" section of her website only to discover the pattern was wrong and I was not. I am not going to frog the booties, though. I showed them to a couple of people who told me they actually prefered them the way I knitted them. So, even though I am not sure I agree (that they look better), I think I will leave them the way they are. Here's a picture of the un-finished item:
